Today is day 22 of the Write 31 Days challenge. I'm joining the challenge and writing on rest & replenishment. To see the complete series, visit 31 Days of Rest & Replenishment.
When it comes to avoiding rest my children have used every excuse in the book along with a few of their own original excuses as well, like, "my legs are bored." Most of the time I roll my eyes and repeat to infinity, "go to bed." However, there is one excuse I almost always give in to: "I'm hungry."
Maybe I'm a softy parent, but really, who can rest when hungry? And anyone who has struggled to keep their eyes open after having a few too many bites at lunch knows how a full stomach welcomes rest like few other things (Thanksgiving afternoon, anyone?).
I can't help but think this is how it is for our souls as well. It is hard to find rest for your soul when it's basically starving for nourishment. In contrast, when we take time to "feed our souls" it is easier to feel at rest.
Today I had an episode not too unlike that of a hungry toddler. But it wasn't my body that was hungry, it was my soul. Ugly things happen when a soul is unattended, empty and tired. This evening I took a little extra time to "feed my soul" in ways I have neglected over the past week or two. And there, in the fullness, I find rest.

"My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation comes from Him."
