I'm surprised by how motherhood gives me new eyes to discover things for the first time, again.
I'm surprised by how much I can delight in the small things.
I'm surprised by both the simplicity and complexity of motherhood.
I never expected it would take so much...or give so much.
I never expected to find all the ways I need to grow up while raising these children.
Yes, motherhood is surprising.
. . .
This past week I finished reading Surprised by Motherhood: everything I never expected about being a mother by Lisa-Jo Baker. It is heartfelt, funny and profound, I couldn't read it in public because who wants to be that crazy lady in the corner of the coffee shop who is laughing out loud one moment and then suddenly crying the next? Finishing the book was like coming to the end of a profound heart-to-heart conversation that is so rare and gives you great satisfaction mixed with a good deal of sadness when it comes to an end. I closed the book with immense gratitude for her honesty, bravery, wisdom and encouragement. I have a great deal of admiration for Baker's mastery of words that weaves the matter-of-fact and heart-of-the-matter together to create beautiful pictures of life and love and truth. The truth is, I want to buy every single mother and mother-to-be a copy of this book. But, alas, my earthly treasure contains more broken seashells than cash. But here's what I can do - I can give away a copy!
Here's the deal - leave a comment and let me know what has surprised you about motherhood, or your mom, or a mom by Friday, May 16, 2014. I will draw a name on Saturday. Please be sure to use a legitimate e-mail address (it will not be shared publicly) so I can get in touch with you! Good luck!
